AMG8816: High-Integration BMS Chip

July 14, 2025

MaiJu Microelectronics introduces the AMG8816, a highly integrated battery management system (BMS) chip designed for 3-16 cell lithium battery packs. It combines comprehensive protection, high-precision data acquisition, flexible power management, and low-power operation to deliver a reliable solution for lithium battery systems.

Key Features

Comprehensive Protection Mechanisms

The AMG8816 integrates hardware-based protection functions, including overvoltage/undervoltage protection, charge/discharge high/low-temperature protection, internal overtemperature protection, dual-level discharge overcurrent protection, short-circuit protection, and open-wire detection. These features ensure safe operation and extend battery lifespan.

It also incorporates high-voltage differential signal detection for busbar monitoring and MOSFET internal resistance checks, with a sampling accuracy of 1mV using OSR techniques, reducing safety risks from connection issues or component degradation.

A hardware-based voltage balancing function automatically equalizes cell voltages without MCU intervention, simplifying development and ensuring battery pack consistency.

High-Precision Data Acquisition

The chip features a multi-channel high-precision ADC for accurate voltage measurements. A dedicated 20-bit current acquisition channel, paired with a coulomb counter, provides precise charge/discharge monitoring with minimal error and zero-drift current across temperature ranges, enabling accurate state-of-charge predictions.

Multiple external temperature sampling channels, combined with internal compensation algorithms, ensure reliable data acquisition and protection under varying environmental conditions.

Advanced Power Management

The AMG8816 includes two high-to-low voltage buck converters and two LDOs. Buck1 supports 5V, 12V, 24V, or 33V outputs up to 150W, while Buck2 provides 6V, feeding three LDOs (up to 250mA) for 3.3V and 5V needs. This architecture supports diverse applications, such as high-power portable devices or stable control circuits.

Its low-power design consumes 90¦ÌA in normal mode and 6¦ÌA in sleep mode, significantly reducing system energy use and extending device standby time.

The chip can operate independently for basic monitoring and protection, reducing system complexity, or interface with an external MCU for advanced functions like coulomb counting or pre-charge/discharge control.

System Architecture and Applications

High-Reliability Design

Built on a high-voltage-tolerant, low-power architecture, the AMG8816 ensures stable operation in demanding conditions, minimizing system downtime due to chip failures. This is critical for industrial applications where high-voltage transients are common.

Compact and Cost-Effective

Its highly integrated design reduces the need for external components, lowering PCB footprint and costs. This supports compact, lightweight devices, ideal for space-constrained or cost-sensitive applications.

Broad Compatibility

Supporting 3-16 cell lithium battery packs, the chip is versatile for applications like electric bicycles, energy storage systems, and garden tools, offering strong market adaptability.

Communication and Control

The AMG8816 supports I2C (400Kbps) and SPI (1Mbps) interfaces for fast, stable communication with external MCUs, meeting diverse system requirements. It provides event-driven interrupt outputs for conditions like overvoltage, overcurrent, or temperature anomalies, enabling rapid response and precise control.

An electronic lock function controls charge/discharge states via logic levels, with user-friendly fault-clearing capabilities. The EDSG function offers PWM-based discharge protection for customized applications.

Application Optimizations

Electric Bicycles

Optimized power management and protection algorithms ensure stable power delivery during frequent starts, stops, and acceleration, extending range and reliability.

Portable Energy Storage

Precise battery monitoring and intelligent charge/discharge control enhance energy efficiency and safety, with multi-voltage buck outputs supporting diverse external devices.

Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs)

High-reliability and low-power features support extended, high-intensity operation, with redundant protections minimizing downtime due to battery issues.
