Modern industrial motion control demands reliable, accurate, and cost-effective encoder solutions to deliver precise motor position data. The NCS32100 inductive position sensor interface from onsemi combines the reliability of inductive encoders with the high precision and speed typically found in mid-to-high-end optical encoders.
Features of the NCS32100
The NCS32100 integrates a microcontroller, enabling compact and efficient designs while reducing time-to-market.
Advanced Inductive Technology
Inductive encoders are valued in industrial applications for their robustness, but their use has historically been limited to low-precision (e.g., <100 arc-seconds) and low-speed scenarios. The NCS32100, a dual-inductive rotary position sensor, delivers the high precision and speed of optical encoders. It employs patented technology with eight signal channels, configurable for up to eight stator coils, to provide both fine and coarse positioning.
When paired with corresponding stator and rotor coils, the NCS32100 calculates absolute position with high accuracy at high speeds. It achieves 50 arc-seconds or better precision at up to 6,000 RPM and supports speeds up to 100,000 RPM with reduced accuracy. The sensor includes an Arm Cortex-M0+ processor with flash memory for configuration storage, enhancing integration and ease of use.
Additional features include fault detection, which alerts users to low battery, sensor malfunctions, or overheating. The device offers rapid self-calibration, completing in just 2 seconds to minimize production downtime, and compensates for PCB asymmetries. Its programmable interface supports various sensor and PCB configurations, accommodating diverse designs, shapes, and sizes for maximum flexibility.
Elevating Industrial Position Sensing
Industrial and collaborative robots require advanced encoders for high-precision, high-speed position sensing. Inductive encoders offer strong resistance to environmental factors, making them ideal for these applications. Previously, their limited precision restricted their use in complex electromechanical systems. The NCS32100 overcomes these limitations, providing a high-precision rotary position sensing solution for high-speed industrial applications.
