Motors are essential for societal development, consuming approximately 40% of global electricity. Compact, high-performance, and energy-efficient motor control is critical for sustainable development and carbon neutrality.
Solution Overview
Renesas Electronics provides a high-voltage motor control solution for brushless DC (BLDC) and induction motors, featuring an inverter board and example code to streamline system evaluation and development. The design package includes application notes, example code, and a PC GUI environment to support development and enhance user experience. The solution supports the RA6T2 MCU, with plans to expand to other RA motor control MCUs.
Inverter Board Specifications
The inverter board enables evaluation of high-voltage (100V/200V) BLDC and induction motors with power factor correction (PFC). It delivers a maximum inverter output of 2kW and PFC output of 1kW, suitable for household appliances like air conditioners, refrigerators, and washing machines. The board supports rapid discharge during power-off for efficient connection switching.
Key Features
- Supports 240V AC and 390V DC input, with maximum output of 2kW (DC input)
- Built-in PFC with 1kW maximum output, supporting single/interleaved control
- 1/3 shunt current detection
- Protection features: overcurrent detection, short-circuit prevention, overtemperature detection, overvoltage prevention, and surge current prevention
- Enhanced isolated communication interface for safe PC control and debugging
The board supports dual-motor control using two inverter boards and a CPU board, with an isolated sensor interface for hall sensors and encoder inputs. Example code for these configurations will be released soon.
Example Code and Application Notes
The example code supports digital PFC power control, adjustable to specific power and application requirements. It includes BLDC motor control functions tailored for household appliances, such as:
- High-voltage motor control (e.g., PFC and vector control)
- Specialized features: torque vibration suppression, rapid startup, step-loss detection, maximum torque per ampere (MTPA), and field-weakening control
Application notes detail control methods and their implementation on the MCU.
Applications and Tools
This solution is ideal for high-voltage motor systems in household appliances, industrial fans, blowers, pumps, and compressors. It integrates with the Renesas Motor Workbench, a development tool for debugging, analyzing, and tuning motor control programs, including motor parameter estimation.
