KMF Insulated Module for Additional Safety in Home Medical Devices

Author : Adrian March 10, 2026

Overview

SCHURTER expanded its power input module range with a non-grounding-plug version intended for protective Class II double-insulated applications. The KMF power input module is known for its compact package and performance and has been used in protective Class I equipment. The new Class II version is intended for home medical devices, where standards require protective Class II designs.

The Class II KMF is designed to IEC 60320-1 C18. It is particularly suited for medical devices that comply with IEC 60601-1-11, which defines additional safety measures for home medical devices. With an aging population and rising healthcare costs, demand for home medical devices is increasing. Compared with Class I devices, Class II devices typically lack a metal enclosure. These double-insulated devices impose stricter safety requirements between live parts and accessible parts. The KMF Class II input module provides double insulation between live parts and accessible parts. The reinforced insulation passes a 4000 V DC dielectric test applied between the live conductor (L) and the neutral conductor (N), instead of relying on a mounting plate.

Features

The KMF line switch incorporates a 2-pole mains switch and a 1-pole or 2-pole fuse holder. For medical applications, an "extra-safe" fuse holder can only be opened using a tool. EMC filters are available for medical applications and a low-leakage (M5) variant. The integrated filter suppresses interference and improves electromagnetic compatibility. Rated current at 250 V AC is available from 1 A to 10 A. Wiring is via quick-connect terminals, 4.8 x 0.8 mm.

Both KMF Class I and Class II versions are certified to ENEC, cURus, and CCC. These protection classes are suitable for other equipment complying with IEC 60601-1-11, IEC 60950, and IEC 60601-1.
