Installation Steps and Precautions for Smart Meters

Why install a smart meter?

Smart electricity use is an important component of smart grid construction. It is a key link and tangible expression for interaction between the smart grid and customers, and a focal point for resilient smart grid deployment. Smart meters provide the material basis for smart electricity use. With deployment of smart meters, users can complete electricity purchase, bill payment, and service changes remotely during work or travel, and monitor household electricity consumption details such as daily and monthly usage and purchase amounts. Networked access allows querying the operating state of household appliances, remotely starting required devices, and switching off unnecessary equipment. Networked and digitalized metering supports more flexible electricity management and residential energy services.

Installation steps

  1. Power off: Before installing a smart meter, turn off the power supply or disconnect the power to ensure safety during installation.
  2. Choose installation location: Install the smart meter in a ventilated location and avoid direct sunlight, rain, or snow to ensure stability and safety. The installation site should allow access for electricians to install, inspect, and read the meter.
  3. Remove the old meter: Before dismantling the old meter, note surrounding safety and stability factors. Disconnect the cable between the old meter and the power supply. According to conductor color codes, loosen the wire clamps (or use a screwdriver) and gently withdraw the conductors.
  4. Install the new meter: Insert the conductors into the new meter's clamps according to color markings; tighten the clamps to secure the conductors. Mount the smart meter on the meter base and fasten the screws.
  5. Power on and check: After confirming correct installation, reconnect the power supply, then verify that the meter's phase sequence matches the wiring. Perform meter tests and correct any errors promptly.
  6. Transfer data: Transfer data from the old meter to the new smart meter, and perform maintenance and monitoring to ensure normal operation.

These are general installation steps. Specific devices and conditions may vary, so follow safety, technical, and professional standards during installation, acceptance, and testing.

Installation precautions

Smart meters should be installed indoors whenever possible. When installed outdoors, use a dedicated meter enclosure. The meter mounting board should be fixed to a sturdy, fire-resistant, and low-vibration wall. The surrounding air must be free of corrosive gases; avoid dust and salt spray. During installation, strictly follow the wiring diagram inside the meter terminal cover. Conductors connected to the terminal block are recommended to be copper. Tighten the screws that secure the conductors in the terminal block to prevent poor contact and heating, which could damage the meter.
