Overview
DuPont Liveo Healthcare Solutions and STMicroelectronics have collaborated to develop a new smart wearable concept for remote biosignal monitoring. The collaboration produced a Liveo smart biosensing patch prototype that integrates STMicroelectronics multifunctional microsensors and control electronics into DuPont's flexible patch design.
Collaboration and System Concept
Eugenio Toccalino, global head of Liveo business at DuPont, said Liveo's research team works with global suppliers and manufacturers to create solutions for medical applications, including smart devices that enable data sharing between patients and clinicians. The wearable concept from the DuPont and STMicroelectronics collaboration uses STMicroelectronics sensors and control electronics embedded in DuPont's flexible patch.
Sensor and Electronics Integration
STMicroelectronics contributed accelerometers, a vertical analog front end, next-generation sensors with on-sensor AI, microcontrollers with Bluetooth modules, ultra-low-power power management units, firmware, and algorithms. These components were used to design the electronics and sensors for the smart skin patch prototype, creating a flexible circuit design capable of synchronized analysis of cardiac electrical and mechanical activity to extract multiple vital signs. Simone Ferri, vice president of STMicroelectronics AMS Group and general manager of the MEMS sub-division, noted that the performance of STMicroelectronics electronic sensors is enhanced by the conformability and electrical conductivity of the DuPont Liveo materials used to make the patch.
Materials and Adhesives
DuPont supplied a range of medical patch technologies, including Liveo Soft Skin conductive tape 1-3150, a silicone-based thermosetting adhesive for sensing and transmitting bioelectrical signals, and Liveo Soft Skin adhesives. The combination of STMicroelectronics sensor and embedded development expertise with semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and the advantages of conductive silicone technology enables Liveo Soft Skin conductive tape to serve as a skin electrode for biosignal monitoring applications where good skin conformability, non-drying performance over time, repositionability, gentle adhesion, and atraumatic removal are important. It can be used as a single electrode for short-term monitoring or in medical wearable patches for long-term monitoring of seven days or longer.
Design and Prototyping
DuPont designed the smart biosensing patch layout and provided rapid prototyping capabilities. The collaboration resulted in a technical toolbox for STMicroelectronics-Liveo smart biosensing patch technology, aimed at remote ECG and SCG monitoring.
Patch Characteristics
The integrated patch approach is smaller, lighter, and more comfortable than typical rigid enclosures, allowing longer wear. The sensors are multifunctional, adaptive, and provide stable data suitable for continuous monitoring applications.
Demonstration and Presentation
As part of the MEDICA Connected Healthcare Forum, Jennifer Gemo, global strategic marketing manager for DuPont Liveo medical solutions, and Oriana Di Marco, head of vertical strategic business development for medical and wellbeing in EMEA at STMicroelectronics, will present a talk titled "Toward Smart Electronic Skin Patches for Cardiac Monitoring," covering the DuPont/STMicroelectronics patch concept and the associated technical toolbox.
