5G Intelligent Gateways for Unmanned Smart Agriculture

Author : Adrian April 28, 2026

Overview

Developing smart agriculture is an essential path in the new era. Leveraging 5G and the Internet of Things to enable agricultural production can reduce labor requirements, allow management of larger land areas, provide more real-time and precise environmental monitoring, and enable more intelligent autonomous control of production.

5G technology, with its wide connectivity and low latency, helps build integrated information collection, device management, and environmental monitoring systems for smart agriculture. This article briefly describes how 5G intelligent gateways can enable unmanned smart agriculture applications.

1. 5G drone control

Thanks to the proliferation of drones, farmers no longer need to conduct manual field inspections. Drones can perform patrols, monitor crop growth, spray pesticides, and measure and survey land.

2. 5G agricultural machinery control

Harvesters, seeders, plows, pickers, and sprayers are becoming increasingly autonomous. The 5G network enables remote and automated control of various agricultural machines. Agricultural machines equipped with the Baima 5G intelligent gateway consolidate data from equipment, including camera video, machine status, and operation path data, and transmit it in real time to a cloud platform, establishing remote sensing and control links. The 5G intelligent gateway can also deploy edge strategies to enable autonomous operation and policy-based execution of machinery, improving production efficiency.

3. 5G monitoring and automation

Widely distributed IoT sensors collect data across crop areas, including humidity, sunlight, temperature, and soil conditions. A 5G-based IoT system can use this data to control ventilation, irrigation, and thermal management in real time to maintain optimal growth conditions. 5G intelligent gateways support edge computing and can coordinate equipment control based on local conditions, enabling integrated water and fertilizer management, automatic temperature control, and autonomous pest and disease monitoring and intervention.

4. 5G smart agriculture platform

By aggregating data from 5G intelligent gateways, a cloud platform can display and update all data collected by the 5G IoT system in real time, helping agricultural personnel to monitor crop growth comprehensively and deploy optimal strategies.
