5G Edge Gateway for Energy Storage Monitoring

Author : Adrian March 03, 2026

In recent years, photovoltaic, wind, and hydropower generation have grown rapidly. Renewable energy's share in the power market has steadily increased and has become an important part of power systems. Because these generation sources are inherently variable, energy storage systems are required to ensure continuous, stable, and reliable supply.

As 5G applications have matured, 5G technology has been applied to energy storage monitoring and management. This article describes an online monitoring solution for energy storage based on a 5G edge gateway.

5G Gateway Selection

For monitoring applications at renewable energy storage stations, an industrial 5G edge gateway such as the BMG5100 can be used. It integrates a high-performance industrial processor and a 5G module, combining 5G connectivity with edge computing capabilities. It supports full gigabit remote data transmission, edge data acquisition, edge computing analysis, and local control policies, making it suitable for storage stations that require real-time sensing, control, and rapid intervention for abnormal events.

Design of Online Monitoring Application Based on a 5G Edge Computing Gateway

1. Environment monitoring

The industrial 5G edge computing gateway is designed with five gigabit Ethernet ports, four PoE ports, RS232/RS485 interfaces, DI/relay/ADC and other interfaces. It supports connection to a variety of temperature, humidity, water accumulation, gas analyzers, smoke alarms and other sensors to provide comprehensive awareness of the storage station's environmental conditions.

2. Energy monitoring

The gateway provides intelligent data acquisition and processing capabilities and supports collection of multiple electrical parameters, including currents, voltages, and power measurements across the storage station, enabling a detailed view of the station's real-time operating status and the construction of a digital twin.

3. Equipment monitoring

The 5G edge computing gateway is designed for industrial unattended environments and supports protocol compatibility, data analysis, and edge device policy control. It enables real-time monitoring, detection, and control of battery packs, capacitors, cooling systems, sensors, and other equipment to help ensure stable and reliable operation of the storage station.

4. Security monitoring and linkage

The gateway can connect multiple intelligent cameras via PoE interfaces to provide intrusion detection, visible smoke and flame detection, and other video analytics. Using edge policy control, it can implement linked responses such as automatic audible-visual alarms for unauthorized access or automatic activation of fire suppression when smoke or flames are detected, enabling rapid intervention for abnormal events.
