Can sopmeone tell me the way of removing those pesky little crosshairs that appear on the board next to the text. I usually just scratch them off before etching, but occasionally I miss one or two.

You can click on the "layers" icon and un-highlight the "tOrigins" and "bOrigins".

My suggestion is that using layers and tick 'none'. Then start selecting 'pads' , ' vias' and either 'top' or 'bottom' as applicable to you.

What exactly is it you're trying to do? The crosshairs show the origins of the components, whether smashed or otherwise.
