FET circuit design

I'm not new to BJT design, but I am to FET/JFET design and am having some real dificulties. Seems that all the books that I presently have access to jump over critical steps in determining the DC quiescent state of the FET. Self bias >seems< to be FET self-rule; not much one can do to change it's operating conditions too much. Just gobs of questions and no answers! My problem is that I live many miles away from anywhere. The closest town is 65 miles and it's just 7K people. The NET is my only real resource. Can someone help?
