It looked like a blank board with no copper, they then drilled holes,
silk screened it, and put into some chemical and out came copper
looking circuit traces. Do I know if they used standard etching methods,
no, that is why I ask the question in case I was merely deceived by
their explanation.

I do think that they may have skipped some processes there.
If there were some technique to have a board with copper without using
copper, that would have been a very famous technique and we would see
decline in the copper price.
