Overview

In modern electronic devices, ESD protection is critical. TVS diodes, also called ESD protection diodes, are a type of Zener diode that suppress surge voltages in circuits and protect devices from electrostatic discharge and noise.

How TVS Diodes Work

TVS diodes are placed between the signal line and ground to protect connected devices from surge voltages. In normal operation the diode conducts negligible current, with only a small leakage that keeps the reverse breakdown voltage above the signal voltage. When a surge exceeds the reverse breakdown voltage, the diode shunts large currents to ground, clamping the surge to a level below the breakdown voltage.

Applications

TVS diodes absorb electrostatic discharge (ESD) pulses that could damage circuitry, helping to prevent component failure and extend device lifetime.

Selection and Maintenance

When selecting a TVS diode, choose a model with suitable breakdown and standoff voltages for the circuit and with adequate peak pulse current rating. Ensure the diode is correctly connected in the circuit, typically between the signal and ground. Periodic inspection is recommended to verify the diode remains functional and has not been damaged by previous surges.
